The Groupies Phenomena of Rock Bands

concert tickets

Groupies and fans are two different phenomena. A rock band fan settles with an autograph from his or her favorite music idol and smiles at it. However, a groupie wants more than just an autograph. They want the whole of the rock band idol, especially in a sexual way. They actually want a child from their favorite rock band star.

The concept of groupies actually came into the spotlights in the 60s. Those were the golden ages of pop music and its modifications into the 70s. Robert Plant said in his interview once that the 60s gave birth to two groups of groupies. One that only wanted sexual encounters with the rock stars, and the other wanted to share it all. They wanted to become part of their costumes, parties, drugs and other aspects of stardom. Sadly, the second group went down into the history of rock and pop music with a bad name.

Beatlemania Eruption

In 1963 Beatles were driving their fans crazy with music and their rock style. That was when the radical fan group known as ‘The Apple Scruff’ haunted the lives of Paul, Ringo, George and John. These fan were always at the gates of the studio or their homes. Another incidence with a groupie was when George Harrison met Bardot a beautiful young beauty and married her. They had met at a shooting and their romance ended soon after.

Tura Satan was a groupie associated with young Elvis and teaching him the bedroom tango. For them this was an exciting way of making love. This is what got her a place in the history of rock n roll. Another important groupie we cannot forget about is Pamela Anderson. She was married to Kid Rock and then got divorced. After that she married Tommy Lee and that marriage also ended sooner. She was formerly on Baywatch and had a scandal with two internet sex videos with her rock stars. Apart from these, she had other numerous relationships with popular actors and models.

Pamela Des Barres has a history with dating rock stars. Her character was even depicted in the movie ‘Almost Famous’. Kate Hudson had acted her character based on the novel written by Pamela in 2005. She had started dating rock stars at the age of 16, and had married Micheal Des Barress in 1977 till 1991.

Winona Ryder was not just a groupie; she also had a career in shoplifting. She had a thriving love life with many rock stars that always ended too soon. Some of her rock stars were Beck, Dave Pirner, Paul Westerberg and Ryan Adams. Later she got engaged to Johnny Depp and then she moved on. She got involved with other rock singers and songwriters of the 90s.

In the 2000’s there are still groupies that stick with the new pop and rock stars, however they are few. Some names that do come to mind are Hanna Beth, Jac Vanec and Audrey Kitching. They are ‘Internet Personalities’ know mainly for their history of musicians they have dated. It seems the description of groupies in this era has to be redefined. What they do for their men is hard to define.

Whatever the case may be, the interest of the fans in the music they get doesn’t falter. In some cases groupies only spice things up. This makes these rock stars even more mysterious for fans. This increases their popularity with fans because of celebrity gossip.
