Name: Redcap, Redcomb, Bloody Cap

Area of Origin: Border Folklore

The Redcap is a malicious and violent goblin found in the folklore of the areas surrounding the Anglo-Scottish Border; the boundary that separates England and Scotland. They are said to inhabit castle ruins along the Border, and are consistently described as short little men with long teeth, taloned fingers, large red eyes and thin, long, wispy hair, wearing iron boots and a red cap on their heads. They are also typically said to wield large pikestaffs; long spear-like weapons used for thrusting into enemies. If a traveler is to wander or take refuge in a Redcap’s abode, the creature will demonstrate its formidable strength by hurling large stones at the intruder. If the intruder dies, the Redcap will soak its hat in their victim’s blood, giving it its distinct crimson color. In some variations, it is said that if their hat loses its color, they will die. Redcaps can be driven away by reciting Scripture or presenting the cross; human strength on its own is no match for their power.
