David Foster details raising a child at 73: ‘I can offer him wisdom’

Despite the challenges that come with raising a child at this stage in his life, David Foster is looking at the baby bottle as half full.

“I think that I can offer one thing to Rennie even though I won’t be around when he’s 50 or 40 even, or 30 maybe,” the music producer, 73, told People of his son, who will turn 2 next month.

“I think I can offer him wisdom from my [73] years on the planet, and maybe that’s not a bad trade-off. I hope so.”

Foster — who shares Rennie with wife Katharine McPhee, 38 — is also dad to five adult daughters from previous relationships: Allison, 52, Amy, 49, Sara, 41, Erin, 40, and Jordan, 36.

In addition to wisdom, the Grammy winner feels his age has lent itself to more “patience.”

“I was not patient when I was young,” he admitted. “I was arrogant and just on the move.”

Foster added that both parenting a toddler and having a boy after raising only girls “is a little bit different.”

“At this point in my life, it’s different again,” he noted. “Not better or worse, just different. I still work, I’m still gone a lot, but maybe the time is a little more precious to me because I got more runway behind me than I have ahead of me now.”

Foster and McPhee, who are more than three decades apart, famously met on the set of “American Idol” Season 5 in 2006 — when she was a contestant and he was a mentor.

Though they didn’t begin dating until 2017, the singer told Page Six in November 2022, “I think that that day that I was in the studio with [him], I was like, I really got the charm and charisma of David Foster.”

She added, “The age difference doesn’t change, but you obviously grow up, so it wasn’t the same thing then. I was so charmed by him, but it wasn’t like what it is now.”

The musically gifted twosome made their red carpet debut at the 2018 Met Gala. Two months later, Foster proposed, and in June 2019, the duo said “I do.”

McPhee gave birth to Rennie in February 2021.
