Katharine McPhee Foster wants you to know she's not that kind of boy mom.

In a new interview the 39-year-old music star revealed that she and 73-year-old husband David Foster “don’t put up with any BS” from their two-year-old son, Rennie. “We don’t want him to be an A-hole,” she told Us Weekly while promoting her new collaboration with Absolute Jewelry. “He [needs] to be nice, polite, obedient, have his own voice and all that, but just [be] a good kid.”

Though McPhee says she and Foster are “really strong” about setting boundaries, they have different parenting methods. “We just have different ways of approaching the boundaries,” she said. “I would say I’m more of that newer generation of gentle parenting and explaining and having a bit more patience in just a new way than what I think the older generation was taught how to parent.”

When they do disagree, McPhee says she tries to get her husband to try her approach “without wanting to take away from how he wants to parent.”

Katharine McPhee and David Foster met through American Idol back in 2006, though their relationship didn't become romantic until 2017. The pair wed in 2019 and welcomed Rennie in 2021; Foster has six adult daughters from previous relationships. “I had all daughters until my son, and I love all my daughters immeasurably, but having a son is a little bit different,” he told People back in January. “At this point in my life, it’s different again. Not better or worse, just different. I still work, I’m still gone a lot, but maybe the time is a little more precious to me because I got more runway behind me than I have ahead of me now.”

That same month, McPhee said she hopes to give baby Rennie a younger sibling. “I would love to have another baby, but we’ll see,” she said during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show. “We’re not in any crazy rush, but I hope so because I love being a mom. I really love it.”
