When I clicked the 'I'm finished' button, I saw it as an emotional state - this book finished me off, made me laugh, tear up, squeal and sigh over a cast of wonderful characters and of course, the enigma himself, 'Daisy'.

A few of my favourite bits:

A must read!

To better stalk a 16-year-old student, a 24-year-old man takes a job in her high school as a janitor, where he leverages her accidentally breaking a window into her helping to do his custodial work. He gaslights her constantly by denying knowledge about the secret identity of a guardian angel whom she texts for help and support. Knowing she lives alone, he is able to sneak into her apartment when she is sick and give her a kiss while she is too groggy to know who he is. He spies on her constantly and sneaks in physical contact with her whenever he can.

How romantic!

Obviously the audience must cheer for their eventual, inevitable marriage in the final volume. (No spoiler, just an assumption.)

Now excuse me as I go shower all the ick off me.

Review of November 2, 2014, on volume 1

It's been 3 years, Theresa of 2011, who was very obsessed with Dengeki Daisy.
And my beautiful, fabulous public library now brings me the fabulousness that resides in Dengeki Daisy. So now I have access to actual book version, not just mangafox.

And I will just say . . . that this manga is not bad. But what I used to think was just a guardian watching over his friend's little sister in secret is so much more than that. This guy is a hacker. He looks good to the main character but is a bad guy when other people look at him.
THIS IS SO MUCH MORE.

To add to the interestingness, we know who Daisy is, but Teru doesn't. This is that kind of book where we know more than the main character and the entire time, we're like, "YOU DORK, THE ANSWER IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR NOSE!" when the answers are right in front of our noses.

There are a few weird things about Dengeki Daisy that I'll put forward (and that will also make 2011 Theresa mad because she was indeed obsessed with this manga).

Isn't . . . Isn't Kurosaki . . . . . . (*whispers) An adult?
Isn't he . . . a BAD INFLUENCE (CIGARETTES ARE BAD FOR YOU!)
Isn't . . . he--
Okay, I can't do this. I really like Kurosaki.
I can't just slander him because of societies views on things. I THINK KUROSAKI IS A GREAT CHARACTER. And how he's so protective of Teru is . . . . it's very romantic.
Just ignore the fact of the gigantic age gap between the two. Age shouldn't matter anyway.
But yes. I'm dying for the two to kiss ENGAGE IN A ROMANTIC MAKEOUT SESSION.

Readers are obsessed with this book because of the romantic romance. And that scary cliffhanger at the end.
Fear not, Theresa, I have volume 2 on hand!

Review of October 25, 2011, on the entire series as a whole. (4 stars)

I was just chilling on Mangafox responding to my mangafox friends' messages on my page, and I asked almost every single one of them "What manga do you recommend? I'm looking for some new reads."
Their lists went on and on, but one particular title that kept appearing on my friends' lists was "Dengeki Daisy".
So a few days ago while procrastinating on my school work, I looked this title up. I bookmarked it and promised myself "ONE chapter only. Then I have to go study."

My mind changed after I read the first chapter.

I kept going through chapters without leaving my seat--at least until I was finished with volume one. And so now, I bring you to my review of what I thought about Dengeki Daisy.

IT WAS......ASFISDFLJAHSFJD (<--so amazing that real english words cannot describe).
My rating is 4.5120496.

I LOVE this series. I LOVE IT.
This series is about a 16-year-old girl named Teru who has a cell phone given to her by her older brother before he passed away. Her older brother tells Teru that when he's no longer around to protect her, she can use the cell phone to email DAISY--someone that will take his place in protecting and watching over her.
Teru does not know DAISY's identity. She does not know what he looks like or how old he is. But she cherishes him and his emails.
One day, while protecting her best friend from getting bullied, she accidentally breaks a window. She can't afford to pay for the damage, so the janitor, Tasuku Kurosaki, makes Teru his slave in order to pay him back for the broken window.
While she deals with Kurosaki even more often this way, she learns that DAISY is actually a lot closer than she thinks.

The plot of this manga is scary the way it's really similar to the situation of my own best friend. (She emails this guy and she doesn't know what he looks like, but they're currently in love with each other. How often do you have a best friend with a situation like that?)
The situations have a lot of differences, but I have to say that THIS MANGA IS DEFINITELY ORIGINAL. It doesn't use cliches like vampires.

PLUS, it's funny! I love anything that's capable of making me laugh!
And I love the art. I love having crushes on cartoon characters (in this case...I am a Kurosaki fangirl).
The reason why it didn't get a perfect five stars was because of a few peculiar flaws in the plot. At a few times, it did seem to drag on just a little--but it was still pretty akdfjalisnfgllama (<--so awesome that real english words cannot describe).

Dengeki Daisy is beautiful, adorable, hilarious, suspenseful, and it makes me procrastinate on my homework. I call this story a "blind love" story because even though Teru doesn't know the identity of DAISY, she loves him even more than how someone would love a lover.

I really wish I could understand what it's like to love someone like that. This way, you only love them for their personality and not their looks.
Somehow, I think that if you fall in love with their personality before you see the way they look, I don't think you would care for their looks when you do find out about them.
Anyway, I recommend this to those in search for an ORIGINAL shoujo manga story!!

P.S. I think manga plots are better than most american novel plots. Novels seem to be way melodramatic.
The romance in certain manga seem realistic.

2023 Review
The romance did not age as well as I remembered.

The manga itself still charms. I enjoyed all 16 volumes. The story does a remarkable job transitioning from sweet, almost slice-of-life, first love romance to an action, adventure, comedy romance. I laughed at loud at times. But this time around...I can't get past the age and power imbalance. It made me uncomfortable.

My poor housemates. I bet they feel like they read it too after listening to me complain!

2020 Review: 5 stars
Gripping re-read. I forgot how good this manga was. ALL THE FEELS.

2016 Review: 4 stars
I don't normally admit to the amount of manga I read. I feel like it unfairly inflates my Goodreads numbers and it would probably shock y'all to realize how much shoujo I consume. HOWEVER I felt I should make an exception with this one because I just finished the entire series and I have been GLUED TO IT almost every waking moment of the past 3 days.
Dengeki Daisy was really fun. It isn't quiet Love So Life, Vol. 1 or Skip Beat!, Vol. 01 or Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 1 (or Special A, Vol. 1...) but it really is up there.
The romance is kept clean and maintains a lovely tension. Great characters with lots of redemption. Layers upon layers of plot, all interconnected. So. Much. Fun. Intense and upbeat and adorable.
A really good manga!

Let me start out by saying that I have never been able to read manga before. I am more of an anime girl. For some reason I always had a problem getting into the whole manga/comic reading. However, I instantly fell in love with this story and had no problems staying on track.

Teru is a girl who has had a very tough life. With both of her parents and her brother dead, she has no one to look out for her... except DAISY. Before he died, Teru's brother gave her a cellphone with DAISY's number in it and told Teru that DAISY would always be there for her. DAISY has become Teru's life support but she has never met the person behind the name.

Kurosaki works at Teru's school as the janitor. He sees how Teru is looked down upon and treated since she is poor. He is also there for support when she needs him because he is DAISY. However, there are reasons why he refuses to tell Teru his true identity. So instead, he keeps an eye on her by hiring her to be his "slave" and do his custodial work for him after he finds her throwing a ball through the school window.

I thought this manga was really light, romantic and funny. Kurosaki is at odds with himself. He cares for Teru but he hides his feelings behind sarcasm. The story covered quite a bit of ground and leaves you wanting more. The little side story at the end didn't help much either.

Awwww, Dengeki Daisy... it warms my heart just to think about this manga. I'm quite serious!

I love Daisy's character and his not-so hidden identity, it is so obvious from the very beginning who is actually is. Then again, Mangaka, Kyousuke Motomi never really wanted to hide his identity from us xD

5 Stars, Completed* June 26, 2017

*Review based on the entire series (Volumes 1-16)

Man, this one was too good.

Typically, I'm not someone that starts reading a manga series unless I've seen (and enjoyed) the anime or live action adaptation(s), but I decided to take a plunge and give Dengeki Daisy a go at whim since it seems to be so popular among shoujo junkies. And now, I understand why this gem is considered a shoujo classic. It has all the right elements to make a reader swoon without including the usual, ridiculous clichés found in most other romance manga such as milquetoast heroines, love polygons, and cheesy marriage endings. The characters are so memorably charming. The storyline is refreshingly unique and suspenseful. And the comedy was so consistently fab. I was belly laughing and giggling so much while flipping through each volume.

Anyway, I was thoroughly impressed with this series. I would say that Dengeki Daisy offers great entertainment to those that are a fan of shoujo manga/anime or seek a guilty pleasure read. (Although, there's no reason for one to feel guilty while reading it. It deserves all the praise!)

(Side note: Also, if you didn't already guess, after I completed reading this series online I made an order on Amazon to buy myself the collection. Yup, Summer is collecting yet another graphic novel series. Don't judge.)

An orphaned high school girl is watched over by a friend of her late brother's; they were hackers who were involved in a probably-illegal project together.

This is not phenomenal, but above average for the type of story. The girl is pretty feisty, and the guy, although attracted to her, doesn't cross the line into sexual harassment.

Surprisingly not terrible. I was surprised that the identity of Daisy was revealed so early (to the reader, but not to Teru). I expected that to be a mystery that dragged on, even while Daisy's identity became increasingly obvious. Instead, it looks like a lot of the plots will come from Daisy trying to hide his identity in a much more natural way. I'm also pleased that it seems like the romance will be able to develop over time. And I like how Teru views Daisy: he's her friend, not because of anything he could do for her (which is why she tries not to ask much of him), and their connection as friends is more important than a romance. It's refreshing, to see a teenage girl put a supportive friendship as a top priority in her life.

This is another series I would never have bought if I hadn't come across the scanlations first. It has a look of the more smutty of shoujo manga and that is what it parodies and satirizes and plays with.

The girl is so take-charge that the male hero, who is totally aware that with their 7 years age difference (or so) he is starting to be a lolicon, has to fight to keep ahead of the trouble that surrounds her - which isn't because of her beauty or because the most popular male in school likes her or whatever other cliché, but because her dead brother was a supreme computer programmer - something the heroine wasn't much aware of - and lots of people believe he left his sister his current developed programmes.

Okay, the manga does not avoid every cliché (only with regards to the reactions of the heroine) - the hero obviously has an angsty past and deep dark secrets.

Still, the six volumes I've read so far have never fallen off the cliff and I've never correctly predicted what the heroine would do, so I'll be following the English release as it comes out - and hope the story won't let me down at the end, heh.

ETA: Shelby, a commenter at Manga Curmudgeon, explained the appeal of the series much better than I.

Starbubbles has invited you to the event: Book of the Month! December: Electric Daisy.

Date: December 25, 2011 10:14PM
Location: The United States
Description:
Continuing with the mysterious caller theme, we are reading Electric Daisy this month! Pick up this series for a different take on taking a call from a stranger.

4 stars for plot line alone-a breath of fresh air in the manga titles! thanks Star bubbles for this title! 5th star for the art, especially when the characters are drawn funny fun-fun.
Teru is the girl-her brother dies-leaving her a cellphone. He says that a person will look after her, after he is gone, via the phone. "Daisy" is the person's name. as well as Teru's favorite flower. She is alone, poor and bullied at school, though she has a posse of other poor students that back her up. She texts Daisy about her day-lying about how bad things are for her. Daisy, though knows the truth-is Daisy spying on her? How far will Daisy go to take care of her? I hope the plotline keeps getting good-a unique twist on the boy/girl story!

Dengenki Daisy more then proves that you shouldn't always judge a book by its awful/mediocre description.

The start of Dengeki Daisy threw me, for the first chapter I couldn't get the tone of the story. It seemed to be over-the-top, and I kept catching myself reading the dialog in mock soap-opera voices. Which is understandable, I mean did you read the description for this? Despite the fact that it does accurately explain the story, it just sounds over-exaggerated. In contrast through, the way the story plays out, it's actually rather subdued.

After Chapter 2 came and went, I was properly convinced how good this was going to get. As the story began to unfold itself and back story was given, I felt really hooked in to what was going on. It's slowing building a mystery, but also has healthy doses of bickering and romance/friendship but it's not heavy handed about it.

Though, I thought that Motomi would have tried to keep the reader not knowing the identity of DASIY for a bit longer then the story did. With such a mysterious figure playing such a big part, I was expecting for it to be eluded to but hidden from us, keeping us solely in the perspective of the female lead Teru who doesn't know who DASIY is. In truth though, I'm really glad Motomi didn't, it would have become rather obvious with the direction the story is taking.

I also like the dynamic it's creating for the characters. Having people reveal whether or not they know DASIY adds this element of "Who is this guy really?", "If this person knows him then how are they connected?" It gives two different perspectives of what's going on, we see DAISY's side and Teru's side of things which adds dimensions the story otherwise wouldn't have achieved.

Speaking of Teru, I have to say she reminds me a bit of Misaki from Maid Sama!, Vol. 1. The very kind but tough and resourceful girl who despite circumstances tries to keep her chin up instead of running for help at every opportunity. It's nice to have a strong female lead where there is a balance between when she needs help and when she knows she can tough things out.

I'm equally impressed by Kurosaki, our male main character. You can tell pretty early on that he's going to be interesting, but the way he's shown to the reader really adds to the story overall. And let's be honest I have a thing for fictional bad boys.

I'm glad that I grabbed this despite being turned off by the description and to a lesser extent the yellow, red, blue colour scheme. (I am super picky about colour schemes... No really, you have no idea, it's a very serious issue.) And I am incredibly happy that I have Volume 2 sitting in front of me, I'm getting excited, this seems like a series I'm going to get more and more into as I keep reading.

I expected the story to be as lame as the title but I was pleasantly surprised. Teru is very likeable as the main character. She is strong yet still able to be silly at times. She is able to stand up for herself when she needs to not just relying on DAISY to come and save her even though she asks him to. I think the thing that makes her stand out from your average shojo heroine is that she seems like a normal girl. Such a simple thing that not a lot of shojo artist seem to get right.

Like Teru, Kurosaki has a lot of depth and character as well. It is the mystery behind his past and his motivations that really drive the story. It’s not just a simple “and then they fall in love” story. The way he interacts with Teru is genuinely sweet at times, even when he’s feigning meanness. I get very tired of reading about hero’s that are just perfect and never do anything wrong, or even if they do it’s an exception or treated as if it’s okay because they did it. The story questions if the heroic things he does are really good. Hacking for instance if, even when it’s used for good, it should still be considered a crime.

I have no idea how to rate this. I've never read manga before and I was recommended to read this first.

To be honest, I was not sure about Dengeki Daisy. Everything felt a little silly, cliché. The fact that Teru is alone in the world and nobody thought about taking her in to foster care? Nevermind, I kinda know there's like a whole different world and rules when it comes to this genre.

About the story, it felt good. Kurosaki is a goddamn hot bad boy and Teru is the funny and silly heroine but a little bad ass as well. They're both so cute together. I can't stand Daisy though, his mails are so depressing LOL. I loved the graphics, btw. I don't know if that's important here, but don't care.

I think I'm giving it 3 stars and will come back later after a few more readings to be fair. And after hardcore research on wikipedia, I found out that shoji is the YA of manga (correct me if I'm wrong)

Copied review from summary of manga website:

Teru, poor and kind girl, recently lost her older brother and only remaining relative. Before he passed, he gave her a call phone connecting her to a person he said would support her if ever he were unable too. as time passes she is cheered on by text messages sent from this hidden person, called Daisy. but one day, through unexpected incident as Teru begins working for the shady janitor at her school, Kurosaki, she starts to question Daisy's identity and may be closer to Teru than she thinks.

Slow build up to them actually flirting with each other but Kurosaki is a hearthrob!

A fairly well done manga. I thought that the plot wasn't as raw as it could have been. The comedy was nice and light, and not to romantically drenched yet. I see it coming though. Check next review later most likely I will have something to nit-pick at.
The few questions to ask yourself are as follows: Who is Daisy? What did Teru's brother die of? How was Daisy beholden to said brother?
The cover was nice, but something about Teru's lips just don't seem right.
