Find the Cauldron Entrance and Enter
When you approach the Cauldron, you will need to kill the Leaplashers and Scroungers blocking the cave entrance. Once they are defeated, go to the entrance and override the door. Enter the door and to either side of you will be two vents. You can climb either one to get to the top and to the main entrance of the Cauldron.
Ride the Cables Down
Go forward and grab onto a cable that you will ride down. Jump down to the next cable and then down to the final cable. The trip will take a little time, but once you get to the end, there will be a platform that you can drop down to. Below your will be two Burrowers.
Drop down and take care of the machines. You can even use Strike from Above if the first Burrower is close enough to you. Take the ramp to the right up and defeat the second Burrower. Override the Network Uplink to your right. This will extend a bridge that will allow you to cross the gap.
Ride the Metal Carriers
Go through the yellow-lit door in front of you. Then go right and up the ramp. Go right into the lit entrance and override the Cauldron door. In this room, there will be a gap between the platform you're on and the platform you need to get to. Go left and use the grapple point to get to a higher platform. From here you can jump onto the metal carriers that are coming down a cable line. Before you do, go to the edge of the platform and you will see two Scroungers on the far platform. You can shoot them down from where you are at if you choose to.
Jump into the metal carrier and ride it until you get to the far platform. Drop down and deal with the Scroungers if you haven't already. Override the Network Uplink to lower the energy shield. In the next room, drop down to the platform on your left. There will be vents that you can climb to get to the platform above. Be careful, as these vents are timed and you might fall off.
Once you're on the platform, go left and climb up the yellow glowy handholds. This will take you to the platform on the right side of this area. Go left and through the entrance on the right. Go down the ramp and turn left and talk along the glowy beam. Jump the gap and go up the ramp to the left.
Ride the Mechanical Arms
In this next area. you will see mechanical arms hard at work. Go right and walk on the glowing beam. Jump onto the arm as it passes by you. Walk along it and you will see another glowing handhold. Wait a little bit to allow the arm to get you as close to that handhold as you can be. Jump onto it and proceed.
Hide in the Vents to Sneak Around the Shellstalker
Go right and drop down. Head to the right and override the Cauldron door. Go left, up and around. There will be a Shellstalker patrolling the area, but the mist from the vents will keep you hidden. Keep left and follow the vents, then go up the ramp to the left. Go right and jump onto the yellow handhold to get to the platform above you.
Go right and override the network uplink to extend a bridge. Cross the bridge and keep going forward until you come to a yellow glowing beam.
You will need to jump onto another mechanical arm. Jump and wait until the arm below you is within safe jumping distance, which is when it is just passing under you. Jump onto the arm and walk up it. There will be vents to your left that you can jump to. Wait until you know you can make the jump. Go up the vents, go right and grab hold of the yellow handholds. Climb up to the platform.
Ride a Metal Carrier
Go onto the yellow beam and jump onto another metal carrier. Ride the carrier to your next series of mechanical arms. Jump down on the platform to the left before you hit the energy shield.
Ride the Mechanical Arms and Metal Carrier
Go to the left and walk along a yellow beam. Wait until the arm is directly in front of you and jump. Push the thumbstick forward and you will leap the pegs on the arms. Wait until the next arm is right in front of you and jump.
Walk up the arm and gran onto the yellow handholds. Press the thumbstick left to grab hold of the handholds.
You will reach a point where you will need to drop down onto another mechanical arm. Walk down the arm to the hand. Wait until the other arm is close to you and press the thumbstick forward. You will jump the pegs to get to the next arm.
From here you will need to grab hold of a metal carrier above you. Wait until you are directly below the carrier and push the thumbstick forward. You will leap onto the back.
Enter the Core
Ride the carrier to the next platform and drop down. Go left and walk onto the yellow-lit beam. Jump to the beam below. Head to the door and override it. Head into the core room and rappel down.
Before you can override the core, a Widemaw is dropped in front of you. You will need to defeat it.
How to Defeat the Widemaws
Widemaws are strong against Fire, Frost, Shock, Acid, and Plasma Damage, making them difficult to defeat with most elemental weapons. However, they are weak against Purgewater Damage, so if you have a weapon with Purgewater ammo, then use it.
There are six possible parts to target, so it is recommended you tag and focus your attacks on these components:
- Tusks
- Tusks have the ability to do a lot of damage if the Widemaw is close enough to attack you with them so detach them as soon as you can. Tusks can only be removed when the mouth is open and Tear damage offers the best results. They are a key upgrade resource.
- Vacuum Unit
- The Vaccum Unit allows the Widemaw to collect materials and eject them as a primary attack. This part cannot be destroyed but it is a weak spot that you can target to cause damage.
- Purgewater Sac
- This stores Purgewater that the Widemaw uses for its Purgewater attacks. If you have a weapon with Purgewater ammo, aim for this sac to make it explode. The explosion will cause a good deal of Purgewater damage. Of course, you can choose to keep the Sac intact and loot it when the battle is over.
- Sparker
- This is shock storage for the Widemaw. You can detach this component to collect the resources, or if you have Shock ammo, you can make this explode. While the Widemaw is strong versus Shock Damage, this will at least do some damage while also preventing the Widemaw from damaging you.
- Vacuum Turbine
- This coupled with the Vacuum Unit is what powers the Widemaw's projectile attack. It is detachable with Tear ammo, and once it is detached, the Widemaw will be prevented from attacking you with projectiles. It also contains valuable resources, so aim for this as soon as you can.
- Resource Container
- The Resource Container contains valuable resources you can use. Detach this prior to killing the Widemaw.
Now that you have a good idea of what to target and detach, here are the attacks you need to know about.
- Projectile Attack
- The Widemaw uses its Vaccum Unit and Vacuum Turbine to suck in rocks and debris around it. Then it shoots it at you in a wide spread attack. If you are too close to the Widemaw, it can suck you closer to it.
- Melee Attack
- The Widemaw has a powerful melee attack where it uses its tusks to cause damage and knock you back. The tusks coupled with the projectile attack can keep you off your feet and damaged for a few seconds.
- Purgewater Attack
- The Widemaw has a Purgewater attack where it sprays you with Purgewater which can damage you over time.
- Shock Attack
- The Widemaw also has a Shock attack that can stun you for a second or two.
Tips and Tricks for Defeating a Widemaw
- Always keep moving. The Widemaw has an arsenal of abilities that can do heavy melee damage, damage over time, knockback, and stun.
- Dodge the projectiles and try to keep out of range of it's Purgewater and Shock attacks.
- Aim for the components first, especially the Vacuum Turbine and Vacuum Unit. Take out the Tusks if you can.
- Use the environment to your advantage. There is a lot of real estate in this part of the Cauldron. There are plenty of places to crouch behind and there is ample room to run out of harm's way.
- Consistently aim for those weak spots and use the Purgewater Sac to your advantage.
Override the Core
Once the Widemaw is defeated you can successfully override the core. You will now have the ability to override the following:
Exit the Cauldron
Now that you have overridden the core, you can leave the Cauldron. You will exit the Cauldron the same way you entered it.
