Carrie Bradshaw's Iconic Tutu Just Sold for More Than $50,000

And just like that, one of the most iconic items in Carrie Bradshaw's storied closet has been sold to one lucky fan — but not without a hefty price tag. Earlier this month, it was revealed that Sarah Jessica Parker's beloved white tutu from the Sex and the City opening credits would be auctioned off at Julien's Auctions. You know, the one she wears while getting splashed by the bus with her own photo on it?

While the company predicted the "oyster white tulle three-tier tutu skirt with a matching satin waistband" would go for somewhere between $8,000 and $12,000, it sold for a whopping $52,000. According to the auction house's website, the show's costume designer, Patricia Field, originally bought the piece for $5 in the New York City garment district.

Believe it or not, Parker was initially slated to wear a 1998 Marc Jacobs dress in the now-infamous opening credits. However, Field wanted to feature something a little more unexpected (after all, Carrie Bradshaw would become known for her eclectic sense of style) that wouldn't look dated in a few years. And thus, the white tutu was born.

Parker wore the skirt once again in the 2008 movie Sex and the City in a sequence that showed Bradshaw cleaning out her closet (spoiler: she kept the skirt). According to Julien's Auctions, there were several iterations of the skirt for continuity purposes, and SJP still has one of the skirts to this day.

The company also auctioned off a John Galliano for Christian Dior strapless dress covered in newspaper print, similar to the Dior dress worn by SJP during season 3 of SATC, which sold for $11,700.
