Chris Hemsworth’s Thor contract is up, but he’s already thinking of future roles

Chris Hemsworth has confirmed that his contract with Marvel Studios to play the Asgardian god of thunder comes to an end after Avengers 4, but he’s already looking toward the future.

It’s evident from Hemsworth’s interview with USA Today that even he isn’t sure of what’s to come. Hemsworth first told USA Today that he “won’t be playing the character again,” but then added that the “possibility” of never putting on Thor’s armor again and stepping into that world was terrifying.

Hemsworth did confirm he was already talking to Marvel Studios co-president, Kevin Feige, about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pointing to Thor: Ragnarok as a potential reboot for the character.

“I felt like we re-invented him,” Hemsworth said. “There is a bigger platform now to continue if we want to.”

Hemsworth wasn’t given a definitive yes-or-no answer to the question, but Feige allegedly told the actor the focus right now is on Avengers 4, which marks the final movie in Hemsworth’s contract.

“‘Look, we just have to concentrate on [Avengers] now,’” Feige told Hemsworth, as reported by USA Today. “So who knows? There are 76 cast members in these two Avengers films. They will be the biggest films of all time, far bigger than my character. It’s a conversation for further down the road, if it was going to happen.”

It seems unlikely that Hemsworth is interested in returning to the same version of Thor that he played in the first two movies, but rather wants to continue down the road paved by Thor: Ragnarok director, Taika Waititi. The question is whether or not Thor fits into Marvel’s plans for its cinematic universe beyond Avengers 4.

The next installment in the MCU, Black Panther, will be released on Feb. 16. Avengers: Infinity War will follow it on May 4.
