Are you ready for a new romcom show?

The talented Chinese-Irish actress Anna Cathcart, known as Kitty Covey from Netflix’s popular trilogy To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, is set to take on the lead role in its highly anticipated spin-off titled XO, Kitty. She will star opposite Twenty Five, Twenty One actor Choi Min-young and Love, Victor’s Anthony Keyvan.

The new show follows Kitty as she heads to South Korea for school and embarks on a new adventure of young love. The show comes five years after the release of the original film, which was based on the novels written by Jenny Han.

Netflix is banking on the success of XO, Kitty to replicate the popularity of its predecessors, as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before became Netflix’s most-watched original film upon release, with many viewers coming for repeat viewings back in 2018, reports Variety. The latest instalment To All the Boys: Always and Forever (2021) continued to attract a massive audience, with 51 million viewers tuning in.

With the official trailer now released, fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere of the 10-episode first season, which will be released on May 18.

Here’s everything you need to know about the young starlet.

Born in Vancouver, Canada on June 16, 2003, Cathcart is of mixed Chinese and Irish heritage – a diverse background indeed. She also has an elder sister who started acting before she did. In an interview with Vulture, Cathcart said that she is really close with her elder sister – just like her character Kitty in the To All the Boys films.

“I feel like the biggest similarity between me and Kitty is probably how close she is with her sisters and family. I am really close with my older sister. Kitty with Lara Jean is kind of how I interact with my sisters, like having movie marathons at home and hanging out with them on the weekend,” she said.

Disney Channel inspires her to act

Despite her young age, Cathcart has already achieved an impressive list of credits, including roles in popular TV shows and films such as Disney’s Descendants 2 (2017), Descendants 3 (2019) and Once Upon a Time (2011). But her first breakthrough was as Agent Olympia in PBS’ show Odd Squad (2014), which led to the Odd Squad: The Movie (2016).

According to an interview she did with Brat, Cathcart started acting when she was only six years old, working in commercials. Her first audition was supposedly for a Little Mermaid toy commercial, but she didn’t book it since she said she couldn’t say “thingamabob”, reported Refinery29.

But while she is now living her dream as an actress, the Gilmore Girls fan said that watching Disney Channel was what inspired her to pursue the career.

“It had been a dream of mine since I was little, and watching Disney Channel every day made me wish I could be there myself. But I never thought it could be a reality for me and that it could be something I could do for real. Sometimes I still can’t believe that it is!” she told Glitter Magazine.

She has three million Instagram followers

Although Cathcart played a supporting role in Netflix’s romcom in the past, she has undoubtedly become a major star in her own right. This is evident from her massive following on Instagram, which currently boasts over three million followers at the time of writing.

Since 2020, she has also become the brand ambassador for FujiFilm Instax in North America and recently teamed up with Lego Group to create three customisable posters using Lego Dots.

During an interview with YSB Now in 2018, the starlet revealed a peculiar allergy to pineapple. She said, “It’s kind of a weird allergy, but yeah, no pineapple here.” She further revealed that she also doesn’t like watching scary things. “I hate horror movies. I think they’re cool but they freak me out so much,” she revealed.

In addition to her impressive acting skills, Cathcart has a soft spot for animals and a love for the great outdoors, which she attributes to her Canadian roots.

She is engaged with social issues

The Gen Z star also used her platform to raise awareness about important causes, such as Asian-American Heritage Month and LGBTQ+ rights.

In May 2019, she posted a sweet picture of her during AAPI Heritage Month on Instagram and wrote: “I’m so proud to celebrate the vast diversity in both countries. I am proud to be me, I am proud to be #phenomenallyasian.”

Cathcart also spoke about her support of the LGBTQ+ community during an interview with Refinery29 and once posted a “happy pride” shoutout on her Instagram page.

“I just want everyone to feel loved, supported and seen. I always try to treat people with respect and compassion, and I hope that starts a ripple effect for others to act the same. Even though I’m only one human, hopefully what I do can move us closer to that goal,” she said during the same interview.
