Putting the ‘Fun’ in Function
Today’s youth is tomorrow’s nation. And today’s youth are our students. Students do
pay a vital role in the society and how a society is shaped generation after generations. The
formative period of an individual is during the student phase and hence it is known to be the
crucial time of life. What is being sown today is what shall be reaped later.
When students are being treated with due respect and responsibility, they have also lived up
to be responsible and respect in
return to the society. When
being recognized, they have the
acceptance to work for a better
society through hardships rather
than giving up in between.
The function of these
generation plays a vital role in
today’s world event. What does
it mean by function?
In Mathematical point of
view, functions are usually rules
that work with numbers. The object you give is a number, and the reply is another number.
For instance, the function rule might be
"add ten.” The original number (input) is 3 and
the new number (output) will become 13 since
the rule is to add two. ( 10 + 3 )

Function tables are also necessary in functions.


Function tables are an algebraic way to work
with numbers.
You will need to analyze the relationship between two numbers to identify the function or
rule of the table.

Make sure you try the function on all numbers within the table to double check accuracy.
Example 1.
In this first example,
I chose -2, 0, and 2 as my x coordinates.
After substituting those values
into the equation: y = 2x +1,
I found my y values to be: -3, 1, and 5.

The function table contains constant and variable. A constant is a number that
doesn’t change. In a function table, the rule is the constant since it doesn’t change in that
table. A variable is a number that changes. The input and output numbers are the variables
since they can and do change according to the constant (the function rule in that table).
Knowing more about functions!
What does the word function stand for? By the word function, we understand the responsibility
or role one has to play.
What is the function of the leaves of plants – to prepare food for
the plant and store them? What is the function of the roots of
plants? They absorb water and other nutrients from the ground
and supply it to the plants and help them stand erect. Can we say
that everyone has different types of functions? Let’s learn about
some types of function in mathematics!

One to One Function

A function f: A → B is One to One if for each element of A


there is a distinct element of B. It is also known as Injective.
Consider if a1 ∈ A and a2 ∈ B, f is defined as f: A → B such that
f (a1) = f (a2)

Many to One Function

It is a function which maps two or more elements of A to the


same element of set B. Two or more elements of A have the
same image in B.

Onto Function

If there exists a function for which every element of set B there is


(are) pre-image(s) in set A, it is Onto Function. Onto is also
referred as Surjective Function.

Operation of functions

1. The sum of two functions. Given two functions f and g , the sum of two functions f + g ,
is defined by the equation , ′ ⸷
Examples :
a. (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)
= (6x – 1) + (x + 5)
= 7x + 4

b. (f + p)(x) = f(x) + p(x)

2. The difference of two functions. Given two functions f and g the difference of two

Examples :

3. The product of two functions. Given two functions f and g, the product of two

4. The quotient of two functions. Given two functions f and g, the product of two
functions f and f is defined by the function, t t ′ ⸷.

a. (f/g) (x) = x – 1 / x – 5 Since x – 1 is not divisible by x +


5, the quotient of f and g is x – 1 / x + 5

b. g/f Equation: (g/f) (x) = g(x) / f(x) Substitute the


given functions to the equation: (g/f) (x) = 2x – 2 / x –

*Remember : In applying the operations of the functions , the


following steps will be applied :
1. Write the equation based on the given functions.
2. Substitute the given values of the functions to the equations.
3. Simplify the values to get the final answer.
