Biography

  • Super Junior (formed in 2005) is a ten strong South Korean pop group created by Lee Soo-man of S.M. Entertainment.

The pop group was originally formed of twelve members: Leeteuk, Heechul, Hankyung, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Ryeowook and Kibum, with thirteenth member Kyuhyun joining in 2006. The members were added to the group by S.M. Entertainment following a series of casting auditions and competitions from 2000-2005. In 2005 an announcement came from Lee Soo-man that the band, chosen for their previous experiences as actors, would debut by the end of the year.

The group’s first official debut was on SBS’s Popular Songs music program on November 6, 2005, where Super Junior performed their first single “Twins (Knock Out)”. Super Junior’s debut album “Twins” released December 6, 2005, sold over 28,000 copies in the first months and debuted at No. 3 in the album chart.

On May 25, 2006, with the addition of thirteenth member Kyuhyun, Super Junior released their single “U” for a free digital download. Within five hours downloads exceeded 400,000 and the single became one of Korea’s most popular songs of the year. A number of sub-groups followed Super Junior including Super Junior-K.R.Y., and Super Junior-T, which were targeted at different audiences. The music and sound of the band varies on every album from bubblegum pop to contemporary R&B and beyond.

Super Junior’s follow-up album “Don’t Don” was eventually released on September 20, 2007 after a number of set backs, the album had mixed critical reviews despite becoming the second best-selling album of the year. After their first Asia-wide tour named Super Show in 2008 and breakthrough into Japan the group released their third studio album titled “Sorry, Sorry” on March 12, 2009. The album became South Korea’s best selling album in 2009 after a month of release and the title track stayed at the top of the chart for ten consecutive weeks.

The band’s subsequent album’s “Bonamana” (2010), “Mr. Simple” (2011), “Sexy, Free & Single” (2012) and “Mamacita” (2014) all cemented Super Junior’s commercial success and were followed by ever expanding tours including South America and Europe.

Live reviews

  • I've been following Super Junior forever now, and they are my absolute favorite Korean boyband, even moreso than 2PM (if you know me, you'd know that I LOVE 2PM). One of the best parts about Super Junior is that they have 12 boys in their band as opposed to 4-6, so there's not only a lot more talent on the stage at one time, but there's also a lot more eye candy.

My favorites are Kangin and Siwon - they're also the best dancers in my opinion. Leeteuk is the best singer in my opinion, followed by Eunhyuk, but all the boys are great when they're together on stage. The group has great synergy when you see them live that you can also view online if you look for their dance music videos - it's almost the same thing! They're really well synchronized with one another and the dance choreography is even more impressive when you see it in person because their steps for each move are almost sync'd together. It's totally amazing how much practice and effort they have to put into their performances. I'd highly recommend that everyone see them even if you don't really like Korean pop music that much, because they're just so good live, that you might change your mind! You won't be "Sorry Sorry" (see? Super Junior pun!)!

  • If you thought Blazing Squad had a lot of members, wait until you check out South Korean pop sensation Super Junior. Pop music has always been something of an obsession in Asian countries with an emphasis on the whole drama and show associated with the genre. There is no doubt that a Super Junior show is a lot of fun but it definitely feels as though they are appealing to a younger audience.

There are great production elements as visual interludes help narrate the show and certain band members get the chance to solo to screaming fans. They come together once more for complex dance routines and simply fill every inch of the stage with the sheer quantity of performers onstage as the actual band are joined by more dancers. It is a surreal performance at times but as it builds to a sugary crescendo with lots of visuals and dancers you cannot help but clap along at the energy and good vibes in the room.
