BIOGRAPHY

So Nyeo Shi Dae (소녀시대) is a nine-member girl group that debuted in 2007 and formed by talent agency SM Entertainment. It is composed of Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun. With the huge popularity of their hit songs ‘Gee’, ‘Tell Me Your Wish’ and more recently ‘Oh!’ and ‘Run Devil Run’, SNSD has become one of Korea’s top girl groups.

The nine members of Girls’ Generation were trained in singing, dancing, acting and modeling. Even before the group’s debut, Yoona appears in a few music videos and gets a part in the drama ‘9회말 2아웃 (9 End 2 Outs)’.

When the company announced that a new girl group composed of 9 members was to debut, Korean netizens compare them to Super Junior (13 members) and gave them the nickname of Super Girls. Moreover, the members’ names were revealed one by one followed by the announcement of their official name So Nyeo Shi Dae/Girls’ Generation.

To attract a larger audience, the girl group had their own reality show, titled ‘소녀…학교에 가다 (Girls Go To School)’, in which they are filmed making their first steps into the industry. On July 19th, the nine girls delivered their first ever performance during the music show ‘M!Countdown’. Even though the segment where they performed has never aired on TV, several videos taken by fans were released on the Internet. The track sung by SNSD that day was ‘다시 만난 세계 (Into The New World)’, which was their first single.

On August 2nd, their first single was released. It included their debut song ‘Into The New World’ and two others, ‘Beginning’ and ‘소원 (Perfect For You)’. A few days later, on August 5th, Girls’ Generation had their first live performance on SBS ‘Inkigayo’ and on October 11th, the group won first place on ‘M!Countdown’, beating out Lee Seung Gi.

After a short break, their first studio album was released on November 1. The title track is ‘소녀시대 (Girls’ Generation)’, a Pop remixed cover of Lee Seung Chul’s hit. The album sold over 100,000 copies, making SNSD the first girl group ever since S.E.S in 2002 to do so. In January, the nine girls began the promotion of another track from their album, ‘Kissing You’. The song reached the top spot and got  first place on three major TV shows : SBS ‘Inkigayo’, ‘M!Countdown’ and KBS ‘Music Bank’.

In January of 2008, Taeyeon became the first member of SNSD to have a solo with ‘만약에 (If)’ for ‘Hong Gil Dong”s original soundtrack. The song enjoyed huge popularity. On March 13th, a repackaged version of their debut album is released, titled ‘Baby Baby’. In April 2008, the group stops promotions. The only three members who remained active were Jessica, Tiffany and Seohyun (‘JeTiHyun’) who unleash the digital single ‘오빠나빠 (Oppa Nappa)’ on music stores.

On August 2nd, So Nyeo Shi Dae celebrated their first anniversary and the girls unveil the official name of their fan club : 소원 (S♡NE), pronounced as “So One”, “Won” meaning “Wish” in Korean. It expresses “I want SNSD, SNSD and their fans are one”. Later, Sooyoung, Yuri and Sunny participate in the OST of the Korean drama ‘워킹맘 친정 (Working Mom)’.

‘Factory Girl’, was a reality show inspired of the American movie ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ showing the girls working as interns at magazine Elle Girl.

At the end of the year, many posters of the group were spotted in the streets of Seoul to promote SNSD’s comeback. On January 7th 2009 their first mini album ‘Gee’ was released and was met with an explosive response from the public. They quickly took over the top spots on various music stores and sold over 65,000 copies of the album within a couple of weeks. It became the biggest hit of 2009 and SNSD’s popularity became bigger than ever at that point.

With ‘Gee’ they were able to dominate various music charts for 8 weeks, an incredible achievement. On KBS Music Bank they were able to get their 9th K-Chart on March 13th, breaking Jewelry’s previous record of 7 consecutive victories. A few days after that, SM Entertainment announced that after three months, the group will stop the promotion of ‘Gee’ to prepare a whole new album, even though ‘Gee’ was still doing very well on charts. The company also stated that the mini album had been very successful, selling over 110,000.

On May 3rd 2009, Girls’ Generation starred in a new reality show called ‘Horror Movie Factory’. But the girls’ popularity wasn’t enough to make the program succeed and got canceled after a few episodes due to its low ratings. This did not hurt their chances in appear in TV shows as KBS Joy cast the group in a new show ‘Hello Baby’, in which the girls took care of a baby named Cho Kyungsan. Every week, a “Best Mom” and a “Worst Mom” were chosen among the members. Even though the competition for ratings was tough, ‘Hello Baby’ was a success.

A few weeks later, the girls unveiled the first picture of their new mini album in which the group is seen dressed in military uniforms. Once again, the netizens’ reactions are explosive. Girls’ Generation returned  sooner than expected and made a comeback during summer with the song ‘소원을 말해봐 (Tell Me Your Wish)’. But because of a few controversies concerning the album’s jacket, the release date was delayed. The mini album was finally released on June 22th. The first week of sales was impressive  having 40,000 copies are sold in one week.

On June 26th, the members had their comeback stage on KBS ‘Music Bank’ and win the first place two weeks later. It is the only award the group will get for ‘Tell Me Your Wish’ on ‘Music Bank’. They also had won two Mutizen Awards on ‘Inkigayo’. Even though ‘Tell Me Your Wish’ did not do as well as ‘Gee’ on the music shows, it is still considered to be one of the best songs this year. The group ended promotions for their second mini album mid-August.

On October 7th, Girls’ Generation released digital single, ‘Chocolate Love’, to promote LG’s new cellphone. While label-mate f(x) got to sing the Electronic Pop version of the song, SNSD sang the Retro Pop one. The song enjoyed great success even though it is not promoted on music shows.

The group announced their first solo Asia Tour ‘Into The New World’ and started with two dates in Korea in December 2009, for which the tickets are sold within 3 minutes. Moreover, SNSD planned to visit other Asian countries like China and Thailand.

In late January, the girls returned with their second full-length album ‘Oh!’ on January 28th. The teaser showed that the girls are going back to the cute concept that brought them on top during ‘Gee’. ‘Oh!’ tops various music charts the day of its release, proving, once again, the huge popularity of the group. On January 30th, SNSD began promotions of the song on MBC ‘Music Core’ and also performs another song from their second album, ‘Show ! Show ! Show !’, for their comeback stage.

‘Oh!’ was easily added to SNSD’s collection of smash hits, as it was able to get5 K-Chart on Music Bank and 3 Mutizen Awards on Inkigayo. The album has sold 200,000 to date, which was a new record for the girl group. In March, the girls unveiled their new concept that netizens had called ‘Black Soshi’ from the end of the ‘Oh!’ MV. SNSD show a new strong, feminine and sexy side of them, going for more mature image this time.

‘Run Devil Run’ was the title track of the girls’ second repackage album. Two music videos are available, a dance and a story version, revealed a few days later. The song was also great success despite the lack of promotion because of the naval tragedy South Korea suffered from. SNSD recently ended promotions and had their goodbye stage on SBS ‘Inkigayo’ on May 2nd to prepare for overseas activities.
