VOX: Cinema Paradiso (1988)

08 February 2024 19:00 till 22:00 - Location: TU Delft Library, Blue Room | Add to my calendar

Our theme for these three VFC screenings is 'joie de vivre', we will try and pick films that we feel affirm life, in all its aspects. The 2nd film in the set will be Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Giuseppe Tornatore. This film also features a score by the maestro himself Ennio Morricone - whom you may know as the composer of many Spaghetti Westerns, including The Good the Bad and the Ugly (1968).

Young Salvatore Di Vita (Salvatore Cascio) discovers the perfect escape from life in his war-torn Sicilian village: the Cinema Paradiso movie house, where projectionist Alfredo (Philippe Noiret) instills in the boy a deep love of films. When Salvatore grows up, he falls in love with a beautiful local girl (Agnese Nano) and takes over as the Paradiso's projectionist, Alfredo must convince Salvatore to leave his small town and pursue his passion for filmmaking.

Some of you may notice some parallels between this plot and that of a recent Spielberg picture, Fabelmans (2022), some critics have considered this the 'American version' of this Italian classic. This film is about how our passions can direct our life decisions, and about what makes our individual lives worth living.

Free! Themed drinks & snacks will be provided!

Movie enthusiasts take note! TU Delft now has a film club that will meet every Thursday night outside of exam periods.
