Sony's 2018 flagship Xperia smartphone might have an OLED display

A new report from its home country of Japan says Sony may finally be getting ready to outfit its top of the line devices with OLED displays. So far, the company has only used LCD panels for its smartphones, but that's set to change in 2018 or 2019, apparently.

That's when Sony's flagships will feature OLED screens like Samsung's high-end phones. The Korean manufacturer has been employing OLED panels in its Galaxy S and Note lines for many years now, and this has so far been a standout feature for those devices - at least compared to Sony's.

Other Android smartphone makers have chosen OLED displays too, and this year even Apple is rumored to be making the switch from LCD for its ten year anniversary iPhone. Samsung is the biggest producer of OLED screens for phones, but Sony is waiting for LG and JDI to ramp up production in order to buy from those companies instead. They should be able to provide enough panels in 2018 or 2019, and could even be a part of Apple's supply chain at that time.
