Netflix has announced that season two will introduce US President John F Kennedy and his wife Jackie.

Michael C Hall, best-known for his role as serial killer Dexter, will play JFK, described as “a natural leader and excellent public speaker who does not take kindly to being upstaged by anyone, especially his wife”.

Quarry star Jodi Balfour will play First Lady Jackie, “a seemingly natural First Lady, but whose charming exterior of confidence and glamour hides a shy woman who loathes public life”.

She follows in the footsteps of Natalie Portman, who has been nominated for an Oscar for her version of the First Lady in the new film Jackie.

Hall and Balfour join the previously announced Matthew Goode, who will play Princess Margaret’s new love Antony Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith will return to the royal drama as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, with Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret.

Kirby teased: “Margaret meets Antony and she goes head first into a completely new, exciting, dangerous, volatile, dysfunctional relationship and then marriage.”

“Tony starts this whole trail of a more bohemian life,” she told Vanity Fair.

“Margaret was best friends with Elizabeth Taylor, and she had loads of American actress friends and singers.”

But creator Peter Morgan has confirmed that he will replace the entire cast for season three as the drama moves into the 70s and 80s.

He explained to Variety that to use make-up to age the current cast "would be wrong".

"They would look ridiculous," he said. "What’s so beautiful about Claire is her youth. You can’t ask someone to act middle-aged. Someone has to bring their own fatigue to it.

"The feelings we all have as 50 year olds are different than the feelings we all have as 30-year-olds. That informs everything we do."

The rest of the cast is expected to return, including Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

Jeremy Northam will play Prime Minister Anthony Eden, who will be replaced midway through the season by Harold Macmillan, who has not yet been cast.

New actors will play Prince Charles and Princess Anne, who will be teenagers by the end of the season.

Morgan has said that Charles especially will be featured more prominently in season two.

“We start to focus on Charles as a young boy and his education, and on Philip and his back story,” he told People.

Towards the end of the season, the Queen will give birth to her two youngest children, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew.
