Taylor Swift Invited Hundreds of Fans into Her Home for Cookies and Dancing

Almost everyone has entertained fantasies of what it’d be like to be friends—like, actual, texting, lay-in-bed-and-watch-Netflix-together friends—with your favorite celebrity. She’d call you up and vent about some weird interaction that took place backstage at The Tonight Show; you’d have nicknames for all the different paparazzi who follow you guys around after lunch; there would be a never-ending stream of re-gifted clothing. Well, for hundreds of Taylor Swift fanatics, that fantasy . . . . well, it didn’t quite come true exactly like that, but they did get to hang out in her house and pet her kittens and eat her home-baked cookies and hear her album a month before anyone else.

Yes, Swift—in anticipation of the release of her 1989 on October 27—held a series of “1989 Secret Sessions” over the past few weeks at her various homes across the world, where carefully-selected fans were told they were attending some sort of secret event, with no knowledge of what was in store for them. While the vast majority of us were not present to dance along to “Shake It Off” chez Swift, Swift’s team released a video compilation Thursday night which gives a good sense of what it was like. No matter what you think of Swift, it’s hard to come up with another example of a celebrity at her level of fame who has given fans this level of access and intimacy. (And if nothing else, the video is worth watching for the pretty fantastic shot of her eyeing the fans from inside her shower at 1:46.)
