GEORGE M. D. MERWIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
' THERAPEUTIC APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,306, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed March 10, 1903.
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. D. MERWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Therapeutic Appliances, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in therapeutic appliances, and has for its object to provide means whereby the actinic rays and the vapors of medicinal salts may be simultaneously administered to diseased membranes.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal midsection of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the incandescent o lamp employed in myinvention and the means whereby it is supported and supplied with the electric current. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the application of a current of electricity to a device embodying my invention.
The outer casing of my apparatus consists of the translucent tube 1, provided at its closed extremity with perforations 2.; Within the open end of the tube 1 the insulating-plug 3 is mounted, which is connected with the lamp-base 4 by means of conducting-strips 5. Wires 6 convey the electric current through the plug 3 to the strips 5, which in turn convey it to the electric lamp 7. The 1amp-base 4 is smaller in size than the diameter of the tube 1, but sufiiciently large to retain gran-- Serial No. 147,208. (No model.)
ules of medicinal salt (indicated by the numeral 8) in place beneath it. The electric circuit being completed by the closing of the switch 9 causes the lamp 7 to light and simultaneously heats the strips 5, causing the salt '40 8 to partially vaporize.
The function of the apparatus thus described is to convey warmth, actinic rays, and medicated vapors directly to the membranous linings of the nose and throat. The tube 1 is of any desired color, which may be indicated for the treatment desired. The tube 1 is placed in the nostril or throat of the patient,
and upon the lamp being lighted and the salts heated, as described, the vapors arising from the salts are drawn through the openings 2 by inspiration.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is-
The therapeutic appliance, consisting of a translucent colored tube provided with a closed end and with a perforated end, an electric lamp mounted within the tube near its perforated end, and conducting-strips whereby the current is conveyed to the lamp and heat generated within the tube, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE M. D. MERWIN.
