The original iPhone was a timing win. Battery, processor and screen tech allowed it to happen.
Apple (rep) at the time said it wasn't possible even the year before. Whether this is true or not,.. Apple do often wait until something is 'right' for market implementation.
(Newton owners in the early nineties could easily laugh at this, as now handwriting conversion technology is achievable,.. Back then it was a whole series of compromises..)
I could always tell who the iPhone users were on trains and buses. They were the ones with lit up faces, due to screen brightness.
It is only in the last couple of years that OLED brightness has caught up, and therefor sunlight legibility.
All the same, they have been denied OLED before.
I am sure a few 'screenologists' (my new word for the day) will be happy to see OLEDs appear in iPhonery (two in one day?, nah, "iPhonery" must be coined by someone...)

Retina displays was a term to indicate a resolution that was higher than what the eye could resolve.
The iPad Pro, as an example, has a 'low resolution' Retina display (By Apples 'Retina' standard) at around 264 pixels per inch. They get away with this by saying that the Pro will be used further from the face, and therefore this resolution is still at the point of visual acuity.
300 pixels is print res (national geographic) and is what we consider the extinction point for what an eye can discern.
(For the record, the real benefit for higher than this resolution would only be for VR headsets, as they are so close to the eye)
My Note Edge has greater than 500 pixels per inch. It is no sharper, to me, than the IPad Pro. Contrast and other factors can play vital roles in actual resolution. In fact the iOS way of rendering graphics/text to screen makes it the superlative experience.
Well calibrated screen, and expensive screen with wide gamut displays cost more (part of the hidden cost of Apple hardware that doesn't make the spec sheet better; just the user experience). Apple, for example, focus on top tier parts (not spec sheet numbers) that actually deliver something important to the end user. This is why many creative types use Apple.
Don't get me wrong, I have many top tier IPS monitors. And I know how to make use of their wide gamut abilities.. But the average user would not. Nor would they want to put the time in to calibrate accordingly. (I do, and have done so professionally for awhile). I enjoy my lounge room plasma TV looking as '3D' as it does (in 2D mode) due to exceptional contrast and proper calibration.
However it is a chore the average user doesn't want to know about.
So factory calibrated colour accurate screens are a boon to consumers. Hence why Retina screen by Apple have much of their positive praise.
We need colour accurate displays (buying off the web), and as long as one screen in the house is colour accurate, we can buy items with a little more confidence about how it will look in real life.
High colour gamut workflows are annoying to the average consumer. Eg Chrome is one of the few wide gamut web browsers around.
The display profile is what sets up colour accuracy. Usually professionals will have a display profile that helps get their output to the printer in line with what they have designed onscreen.
Samsung make exceptional OLED panels.
This nonsense of OLED panel issues, I have only ever experienced firsthand (having owned many many OLED devices) on non Samsung panels (My Nexus S is still perfectly fine, as an example). And even then I only have only ever sighted one faulty panel and it was a refurbished Motorola unit from quite a few years ago... I still prefer having pure black and I can put up with a slight ghost in the screen on quick transistors that is an issue with only one, poor quality OLED panel.
Apple have been wanting OLED for years.
And everytime they went into meetings with Sammy, they would sell OLEDs praises, and upon being denied (Samsung want a competitive edge in their products!), would walk away from the meeting quoting "at least our screen are colour accurate". (to which Samsung replied with colour profiles for their phones, so users could choose., and gave the market the best screens in the world as a result!)
Personally I have issue with closed systems running varied hardware.
As an example, the PlayStation Vita...
The first model was OLED.
Developers could design art based on the nice colour saturation.
The rereleased model, went LCD, had vastly less colour saturation.. So now, which model do developers design their art assets for?
Going forward, LCD models will outnumber OLED models... So the glory of looking at Dragons Crown on the OLED display, will be a washed out affair on the LCD panel.
So as long as the iPhone OLED keeps colour accuracy their should not be an issue that 'NON OLED' panels will appear visually inferior, or different.
Certainly, knowing that black screens consume less power, they could do all sorts of 'always on' features, such as displaying a scrolling clock...
But I suppose this would be a patent infringement.
I was with Winphone when they first added the idea, on their new OLED panels.. Problem was I had an older LCD panel, and the idea not sound to implement on my display tech...
So Apple will have several products in the market that need different optimisations..
Eg, a white screen on LCDs is easier to produce (open all the 'gates', vs on an OLED, 'fire all the pixels'),.. So they won't be able to safely choose an interface colour that optimises for battery life...
I suppose we will just have to wait and see what design choices they go with. (And even whether it is LG or Sammy that take the order). I did read recently that a shed load more OLED manufacturing plants are being built,.. MAybe OLED TVs will become a viable option in the future...
Not sure, but the TV argument is probably where panel lifetime truly matters.
I kinda always assumed that OLED being the premium part, was just better to cut more 'smaller' screens and sell them in more devices.
I think Sonys first OLED Television was a tiny affair that cost $5000, whilst ChangHong or some super cheap dodgy brand came to market with with a $12000 32".
I look forward to a fast switching, FHD panel around fifty inches being released (to replace my plasma), for around $1000.
I won't hold my breath awaiting this.

Amoled screens huh! that means after buying the phone you can use it for 2-3 years max after which the "amoled" screen will be badly burnt-in which will render the display useless, Well if you are a person who changes phones every year its no issue.

In the first iphone apple used, both Samsungs designed and made screens, memory and cpu. later the Samsung shared the supply of the screens with Toshiba, Sharp etc. who were making iphone 3gs, 4 screens under Samsung license. Later with the release of 4s apple split with samsung used only screens from Toshiba and other cheaper suppliers who were again making apple "retinas" on Samsung patent (that is not any kind of patent violation, they were paying Samsung royalties for the patents). I still remember when whole loads of batches of iphone 4s screens came defective from various subcontractors who had no good technology in house to fulfill Samsung patent requirements and hence were supplied inferior quality screens.The truth is - Samsung screens are the best, majority of other best screens are patented by saumsung and majority of samsung competitors makes, or uses screens which are samsungs designed and patented and samsung gets fair share of royalties. There are no matching screen to the ones of Samsung in terms of quality, but their are fairly expensive - hence unfit for cheap iphone. Screen alone on s6edge costs $220, while the entire iphone 6 costs only $120 to produce- quite simple math apple cannot afford samsung screens if they want to keep their profit margin, or their need to change pricing so that each iphone with Samsung screen going to cost $1500.

Euther way the industry display standards people say which display is the best on the market, not you or I, and did you think they declared apples the best, check back on this site for your aanwer.
As for the over saturated nonsense comment below, every unbiased unpaid to say otherwise commentator on the planet knows, if you buy a samsung amoled flagship, you not only get the best screen on the market, you, the consumer get to choose, youself, wether you run YOUR phone in blindingly beautiful mode or, most accurate rendering on the market colours mode, its, your choice ,and as its a samsung , no apple can't tell you what to do or make you watch it the way they have decided for YOU.
End game ,amoled is so good, apple can't survive outside, they want in. So then samsung make the best (and they,yes,are amoled.) screens on the market, apple agree, and want em,
and people like you say they are wrong.No. Don't wait till maybe 2017 to spend a fortune to have a go at apples experimental go at amoled..get the best on the market fabulously screen s7 edge now..apple think you should. lol

It is good by apple own standard of 2010, but comparing with leading manufacturers like Samsung, apple screen is joke e.g. iPhone 6s has tiny screen with tiny and stupid resolution, which is as well not power efficient. If you compare the screen with lest say s6edge - you will see, the resolutions is like 4 times the iphone, it is brighter, richer and yet more energy efficient.. not to mention it is even curved.
This battle is like bare (apple) hands versus laser cannons (samsung).

Over saturated - great! what is the problem here? If we would be talking about professional monitors for printing or photo/video editing .. then yes it is important, but on phones that is probably last thing you care about - the more the colours are "over-saturated" the better - I call that Vivid, deep, bright - that is all good things.. it is pretty stupid to value the phones on the colour accuracy which is not important to phones. BTW Samsung has one of the most accurate screens - fact.

What I have are a video of a serial SGS6 that shows how actually performs SGS6 screen and complains of hundreds of other users on XDA and 4PDA. Those forums are far more respected in geek world than your sold DisplayMate. And hardly any other defect goes far to 100 page on those forums. Even Z5C defective camera threads.
What you have are just fanatic screams and accusations. More like you have been paid by Samsung.
