The Harrier stands between the taller Foxhound and the smaller Beagle as the intermediate sized scent hound and its conformation and appearance is similar to those members of its family. The breed’s history can be traced back at least to the thirteenth century and its name reflects its original function; to hunt hare. It was known in some quarters as the Hare Hound. The Harrier was originally followed on foot but after some interbreeding with the Foxhound in the nineteenth century to produce a faster, lighter hound, they could also be followed on horseback. The last century has seen a huge fall in the number of Harrier packs .Although still rare as family companions, the Harrier is affectionate and smart , but of course needs an active lifestyle with plenty of exercise. A Vulnerable Breed is one that has less than 300 puppies born each year.
